Sheet metal panels, tracks, brackets, and hardware have sharp edges that cause frequent cuts
Overhead door panels, tracks, angles, and brackets are made from galvanized sheet steel with factory-cut edges that can be razor-sharp. Handling panels without gloves, reaching into tracks, and cutting materials in the field all create laceration risks. Deep cuts from sheet metal can require stitches and create infection risk, especially in field environments.
Wear cut-resistant gloves for all handling
Use ANSI A4 or higher cut-resistant gloves when handling panels, tracks, and hardware. Standard leather gloves offer some protection but cut-resistant gloves are significantly more effective against sheet metal edges.
Deburr cut edges in the field
When cutting track, angle, or sheet metal in the field, use a file or deburring tool to remove sharp burrs before handling or installing the piece.
Use proper lifting technique for panels
Grip panels from the edges where they are reinforced or folded, not the raw cut edge. Use panel carriers or suction cups for large sections.
Keep a first-aid kit accessible
Have a stocked first-aid kit on the truck with bandages, antiseptic, butterfly closures, and gauze for treating cuts in the field. Deep or heavily bleeding cuts require professional medical attention.
