Section Replacement
Detailed procedure for replacing a damaged panel section on a sectional overhead door. Covers identifying and sourcing an exact-match replacement section, securing the door and disconnecting the operator, torsion spring unwinding and cable disconnection when the bottom section is involved, hardware removal, sliding the damaged section out of the interlocking joints, inspecting adjacent sections and track, installing and seating the new section, reinstalling hardware, reconnecting cables and rewinding springs, and balancing and testing the completed door. Applies to both intermediate and bottom sections on residential and commercial sectional doors.
Warnings
This procedure must only be performed by trained, qualified door service technicians. Bottom section replacement involves torsion spring handling, which can cause serious injury or death if done improperly.
If replacing the bottom section, the lift cables must be disconnected. This requires unwinding the torsion springs first. Never disconnect cables from bottom brackets while springs are wound — the brackets are under extreme tension.
Secure the door in position with clamps before removing any section. An unsupported door can shift or fall, causing injury.
Replacement sections must be the exact manufacturer match. Mismatched sections will not interlock properly and compromise the structural integrity of the door.

Procedure — 7 Steps
Step 1
Identify and Source the Replacement Section
Replacement sections must be the exact manufacturer match. Mismatched sections will not interlock properly and compromise the structural integrity of the door.
Before ordering anything, fully document the section that needs to be replaced. Record the door manufacturer, model number, section number (sections are numbered from the bottom up), section dimensions (width, height, and thickness), color, and insulation type. Order the exact replacement section from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor. Verify that the replacement matches the original in every respect before beginning work — an incorrect section will not interlock with the adjacent sections and will compromise the door.
Pro Tips
- Photograph the manufacturer's label or spec plate — it usually carries the model and part information needed to order the correct section.
- Sections are numbered from the bottom up; note which number you are replacing so hinge and hardware positions can be matched later.
- Confirm color and insulation type, not just dimensions — a visually similar section from another product line often will not tongue-and-groove correctly.
- Order through the manufacturer or an authorized distributor to guarantee an exact interlock match rather than a generic substitute.
