Opener Troubleshooting

Systematic diagnosis and repair of common residential garage door opener issues. This is a linear diagnostic and reset sequence a technician runs top to bottom — verifying power, testing the wall button, checking the remote, inspecting the safety sensors (photo eyes), reviewing travel-limit and force settings, inspecting the drive mechanism, and finishing with a full safety test and documentation. It complements the symptom-based diagnosis wizard by giving a repeatable checklist rather than a branching tree.

Warnings

Always disconnect power before inspecting wiring or electrical components inside the operator housing.

After any opener repair, test all safety devices (photo eyes, auto-reverse) before returning the door to service per UL 325.

If the opener is running but the door will not move, the problem may be a broken spring — not the opener. Check spring condition before diagnosing the operator.

Procedure — 7 Steps

Step 1

Verify Power Supply

Always disconnect power before inspecting wiring or electrical components inside the operator housing.

Start at the power source. Check that the operator is plugged in and the outlet has power. Test the outlet with a multimeter or by plugging in another device. Check the breaker panel for tripped breakers. Some operators have an internal fuse — check the manual for location.

Pro Tips

  • Confirm the outlet itself is live before suspecting the operator — plug in a known-good device or read it with a multimeter.
  • A GFCI outlet feeding the operator may have tripped even when the panel breaker looks fine — press its reset button.
  • Check the breaker panel for a tripped or half-thrown breaker on the garage circuit.
  • Some operators carry an internal fuse; consult the manufacturer manual for its location before assuming the board is dead.
