Hinge Replacement

Replacing worn or damaged hinges on sectional overhead doors

BasicMaintenance20–45 min1 person

Warnings

Hinges are numbered (#1, #2, #3, etc.) based on their position on the door and the gauge of the door. Using the wrong hinge number can cause binding, poor tracking, or premature wear.

Never remove the bottom bracket hinge — it is under spring tension. Service bottom brackets only with proper spring tools and training.

Replace only one hinge at a time to maintain door alignment.

Required PPE

  • Safety glasses
  • Leather gloves
  • Steel-toed boots

Tools Required

  • Replacement hinges (correct gauge and number — #1 through #5+)
  • Socket set (7/16", 1/2")
  • Drill with socket adapter (optional, speeds work)
  • Stepladder

Procedure — 5 Steps

1

Identify the correct replacement hinge

Hinge numbers correspond to the joint between door sections. #1 hinges are used between the bottom section and the second section. Higher numbers are used at higher joints and carry more load. Match the hinge gauge to the door weight. Check the existing hinge number stamped on the hinge plate.

2

Disconnect the operator and secure the door

Disconnect power and pull the emergency release. Close the door and clamp vise grips on both tracks above the bottom roller.

3

Remove the old hinge

Remove the bolts holding the hinge to the door section. If the hinge also holds a roller, note the roller position. Pull the hinge away from the door. Inspect the bolt holes in the door section — if they are wallowed out, you may need to use larger bolts or back plates.

4

Install the new hinge

Position the new hinge in the same location. If it holds a roller, insert the roller stem through the hinge before bolting. Tighten all bolts securely but do not over-torque (can crush the door section).

5

Repeat for additional hinges and test

Replace one hinge at a time, working systematically through the door. After all hinges are replaced, reconnect the operator and cycle the door 3–4 times. Check for smooth operation, even tracking, and no binding at the hinge joints.
